As Month of the Military Child comes to a close, it's a good time to look at the legacy our teachers have left behind in the students they taught and the places that became their homes. Many great teachers have made lasting impressions on the kids in their classroom as well as the communities they lived in.

Have you ever wondered where the DoDEA logo came from? Last month saw the passing of the DoDEA teacher and artist who created it, Calvin Bohner. Mr. Bohner, who was also my father, worked for DoDEA for 29 years - starting as an art teacher in 1962 in Stuttgart, Germany at the old Ludwigsburg High School, and then teaching art in Okinawa, Giessen, and Wiesbaden. He was the Art Coordinator of the Pacific after he left the classroom, and then went on to work at Headquarters as the DoDEA Art Director where he designed the logo.

You can see his sketches below. The DoDEA logo wasn’t just a font he chose, he actually designed the letters and adjusted them artistically to create a harmonious whole. Mr. Bohner believed that DoDEA art teachers are the best. It is nice to see that his work lives on in all we do everyday!

Because of the lasting impression he made on his students and me, I have continued the family tradition by being an Art teacher at Stuttgart High School. And I hope my students remember me as fondly as I remember my dad.
