Stuttgart High School Hosts First Comic Con
March Manga Madness arrived at Stuttgart High School when the Information Center hosted its inaugural Comic Con, a celebration of literacy, creativity and student interest. The program was created by the Stuttgart High School Library Management Team and Information Specialist Ms. Lisa Korkowski to honor the many fandoms represented within the student body. The idea was inspired by Ms. Korkowski’s time in the Pacific South District, where she and Ms. Andrea Petz, Information Specialist at Ryukyu Middle School, co-founded a Character Con event for elementary and middle school library patrons.
During Comic Con, the Information Center showcased its extensive collection of manga, comics and fanfiction titles. Students were invited to display and discuss their creative talents, while attendees had the opportunity to meet peer artists and comic creators. Members of the Library Management Team hosted interactive stations on writing fan fiction, roleplaying games, and introducing students to the manga genre. Take-home activities, including superhero fortune tellers and coloring pages, were also available. Students collected stickers from their favorite anime and manga, and entered drawings to win donated prize baskets.
Dr. Michael Mosby, an art and photography teacher at Stuttgart High School, attended the event and praised its impact. “SHS’s Comic Con was a huge success, with many students taking the opportunity to either showcase their talents or come as an observer,” Mosby said. “From their attire to the art and writing samples on display, it was evident this was an event students were passionate about. It was great to see high school students so engaged and supportive of each other's shared interest.”
Mrs. Korkowski and the Library Management Team loved the event’s collaborative spirit, and the team was especially thrilled by the positive peer feedback. Seeing students genuinely excited about a program they helped design made the experience especially rewarding for the team. Building off this year’s success, the Library Management Team looks forward to expanding Comic Con and making it an annual tradition!
